Description

This book replaces top-down approaches to Indigenous community development with a more holistic and emic approach that incorporates Indigenous knowledge and philosophies and features practitioners' own experiences. This is intended for both academics and practitioners and aims to reframe the way community development is discussed. This text argues that community well-being, like an individual's, requires holistic care, and it puts well-being at the forefront of community development concerns. It emphasizes interconnectedness between aspects of community- economy, health, education, worldview, social organizing etc. - that contribute to individual and collective well-being. After laying a conceptual foundation, four interviews discuss first-hand participation in worldview/values-guided projects. These aim to have readers find their own lessons in other Indigenous people's experiences and alternative and culturally specific ideas to apply to their community work.
